Types of Dental Implants

Every smile is unique, and so are the solutions to restore it. At Indian Valley Dental, led by Dr. Spencer Grossman, we understand the importance of a confident smile. In this blog, we'll explore the various types of dental implants available to restore your smile to its former glory.

Understanding Dental Implants

Dental implants are a popular and effective long-term solution for people who suffer from missing teeth, uncomfortable dentures, or are about to lose a tooth. They fit, feel, and function like natural teeth because they are designed to fuse with bone. Dental implants are the only dental restoration option that preserves and stimulates natural bone, helping to stimulate bone growth and prevent bone loss.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most commonly used type of dental implant. They are typically made from titanium and shaped like small screws. Endosteal implants are placed directly into the jawbone. After the surrounding gum tissue has healed, a second surgery is needed to connect a post to the original implant, and an artificial tooth is then attached to the post.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are an alternative for patients who lack a healthy natural jawbone and cannot, or do not want to, undergo a bone augmentation procedure to rebuild it. Unlike endosteal implants, subperiosteal implants are placed under the gum but on, or above, the jawbone.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are the least common type of implant and are only used if you have a significant amount of bone loss in your upper jaw and traditional implants cannot be used. These implants are longer than other types and are placed in the cheekbone (zygoma).

Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants, also known as narrow or small-diameter implants, are similar to traditional implants but are slightly thinner. They are often used in patients who have smaller teeth or in areas of thin bone that cannot support larger implants.

Benefits of Dental Implants Over Alternative Treatments

Compared to traditional tooth replacement options like bridges or dentures, dental implants offer several unique advantages. Dr. Grossman can highlight these benefits, such as improved stability, longevity, and preservation of adjacent teeth and bone structure. Exploring the advantages of dental implants can help you make an informed choice about restoring your smile.
